If the Elementor editor is stuck loading, first clear browser and site caches, then go to Elementor, Settings, Advanced and switch the editor loader method, raise the PHP memory limit to at least 256M, update Elementor, WordPress and PHP, and disable other plugins one by one to find a conflict. Optimisation settings that delay or combine JavaScript, and services like Cloudflare Rocket Loader, are frequent causes. Take a backup before changing anything.
- Clear caches and try a private browser window first.
- Elementor’s “Switch Editor Loader Method” setting fixes many cases.
- Low PHP memory and plugin conflicts are the most common causes.
- Exclude Elementor from JavaScript delay and combine features.
- Use a staging copy for conflict testing on a busy site.
What does “Elementor not loading” look like?
- The grey loading screen spins forever.
- The left widget panel stays empty or grey.
- The editor opens to a blank white page.
- A “Preview could not be loaded” or server error message.
How do you fix it, step by step?
| Step | What to do | Fixes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Clear browser cache or open a private window; disable browser extensions | Stale scripts, ad blockers |
| 2 | Clear the caching plugin and CDN cache; regenerate Elementor CSS (Elementor, Tools) | Old files served |
| 3 | Elementor, Settings, Advanced: enable “Switch Editor Loader Method” | Server or preview URL issues |
| 4 | Raise PHP memory to 256M or 512M (wp-config.php or hosting panel) | Memory exhaustion |
| 5 | Update Elementor, Elementor Pro, WordPress and use a supported PHP version | Version incompatibility |
| 6 | Exclude Elementor scripts from delay, defer and combine JS in your optimisation plugin; disable Cloudflare Rocket Loader | Script loading order |
| 7 | Deactivate plugins except Elementor, test, then reactivate one by one | Plugin conflict |
| 8 | Switch to a default theme temporarily | Theme conflict |
| 9 | Check the browser console and enable WP_DEBUG_LOG | Shows the exact error |
| 10 | Ask the host about ModSecurity or firewall rules blocking admin-ajax | Server security rules |

Why does Elementor stop loading after an update?
Imagine an agency site that updated Elementor and an addon pack on the same morning. The editor froze. The cause was the addon, which had not yet been updated for the new Elementor version. Rolling back the addon and waiting a week for its fix solved it. Update the builder and its addons one at a time, test the editor between updates, and keep a backup so you can roll back.
How do you find the exact error?
Right-click inside the stuck editor, choose Inspect, and open the Console tab. Red errors usually name the plugin or file at fault. On the server side, enable WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG in wp-config.php (as described in the WordPress debugging handbook) and read wp-content/debug.log. Turn debugging off again when you are done.
How do you stop it happening again?
- Use only a few well-maintained addon plugins.
- Test updates on a staging site first.
- Keep PHP and memory limits at the levels Elementor recommends.
- Exclude the editor from aggressive optimisation features.
If the editor works but your edits do not appear on the live site, that is a different problem; see Elementor changes not showing.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Elementor stuck on the loading screen?
Common causes are low PHP memory, plugin or theme conflicts, caching and JavaScript optimisation settings, outdated versions, and server firewall rules.
How do I switch the Elementor editor loader method?
Go to Elementor, Settings, Advanced and enable Switch Editor Loader Method, save, then reload the editor.
How much PHP memory does Elementor need?
At least 256M is a safe minimum for most sites, and 512M helps on larger sites with WooCommerce or many addons.
Can a caching plugin stop Elementor from loading?
Yes. Delaying, deferring or combining JavaScript can break the editor. Exclude Elementor scripts or the editor from those features.
