If your WordPress contact form is not working, test whether the form submits but the email never arrives (the most common case) or whether the form itself fails. Email problems are fixed by sending through SMTP with an authenticated account and correct SPF, DKIM and DMARC records. Submission problems usually come from caching, JavaScript optimisation, an expired reCAPTCHA key or a plugin conflict. Also check the form plugin’s saved entries so no lead is lost.
- Most “broken forms” actually submit; the email is what fails.
- Use an SMTP plugin with a real mailbox or email service.
- Set the From address to your own domain.
- Turn on entry storage so leads are saved even if email fails.
- Test forms monthly and after every hosting or email change.
How do you tell which problem you have?
| What happens | Problem type |
|---|---|
| Success message shows, no email arrives | Email delivery |
| Email arrives in spam | Sender authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) or From address |
| Button spins or nothing happens | JavaScript, caching or AJAX blocked |
| “Error” message on submit | reCAPTCHA keys, server error or security plugin |
| Form looks broken or missing | CSS or plugin conflict |
How do you fix email delivery?
- Install an SMTP plugin (for example WP Mail SMTP).
- Connect it to a real mailbox or a mail service (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Brevo, Mailgun and similar).
- Set the From email to an address on your domain, not a Gmail address.
- Add or check SPF, DKIM and DMARC DNS records for the sending service.
- Send a test email from the plugin and check the log.
- Set the form notification to send to a monitored inbox, with Reply-To set to the visitor’s email.

How do you fix a form that will not submit?
- Exclude the form plugin’s scripts from JavaScript delay and combine features.
- Clear page caches; forms with expired nonces fail on cached pages.
- Check reCAPTCHA or Turnstile keys match the domain.
- Look for red errors in the browser console.
- Temporarily disable security or firewall plugins to test.
How many leads can a broken form cost?
Imagine a solar installer whose quote form had been silently failing for six weeks after the business changed email provider. The form showed a friendly thank-you message every time, so nobody noticed. At even two enquiries a week, that is a dozen lost quotes. Turning on entry storage in the form plugin would have kept every one of them in the dashboard. That is why I recommend saving entries and testing monthly.
How do you reduce spam without blocking real people?
Use a honeypot field, a time check (bots submit instantly) and an invisible challenge such as Cloudflare Turnstile or reCAPTCHA v3. Avoid hard puzzles that frustrate real visitors on phones.
Want every lead to arrive?
I set up WordPress email properly with SMTP and DNS records, fix form conflicts and add entry storage, then test from several devices. Ask for a form and email check.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my WordPress contact form not sending emails?
WordPress uses the server mail function by default, which is often blocked or marked as spam. Send through SMTP with an authenticated account and correct DNS records.
Why do my form emails go to spam?
Usually because SPF, DKIM or DMARC records are missing, or the From address is not on your domain.
How do I know if my contact form works?
Submit it from a phone and confirm the email arrives, and check that entries are saved in the form plugin.
Can caching break a contact form?
Yes. Cached pages can contain expired security tokens, and JavaScript optimisation can stop the form script from running.
