WordPress users only need a little HTML and CSS to go further: HTML basics (headings, paragraphs, links, images, lists) help you understand page structure and SEO; CSS basics (selectors, colours, fonts, margin and padding, display and flex, media queries) let you make small design tweaks that widgets cannot. Two or three weeks of short practice is enough to be useful.
- HTML explains structure; CSS controls appearance.
- Learn headings, links and images first.
- CSS margin, padding and flex solve most layout tweaks.
- Use browser DevTools to inspect and test CSS.
- Add CSS through Elementor or Additional CSS, not theme files.
What HTML should you learn?
| Element | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| h1 to h6 | Heading structure and SEO |
| p, ul, ol, li | Readable content |
| a href | Links and buttons |
| img with alt | Images and accessibility |
| div, section | Layout containers |
What CSS should you learn?
- Selectors: classes and IDs (.my-button, #hero).
- Colour, font-size, font-weight, line-height.
- Margin, padding, border, border-radius.
- Display, flex, gap and alignment.
- Media queries for mobile adjustments.

How do you practise CSS safely?
Picture right-clicking a button, choosing Inspect, and changing its border-radius live in the browser to see the effect, then copying the working rule into Elementor’s Custom CSS. That loop of inspect, test and paste is how most designers learn. See the Elementor custom CSS tutorial.
