Bangla speakers can improve English pronunciation fastest by working on a small set of sounds that don’t exist in Bangla or behave differently: V and W, Z, F, the two TH sounds, S and SH, short and long vowels, and word stress. Practise each sound with minimal pairs (like “very” and “berry”), record yourself and compare with a dictionary’s audio, and use short daily speaking practice with an AI partner or real people so the new sounds become automatic. Clear pronunciation matters more than having a “native” accent.
- Aim to be clear, not to sound American or British.
- A handful of sounds cause most misunderstandings for Bangla speakers.
- Minimal pairs train your ear and mouth at the same time.
- Word stress changes meaning and clarity more than people expect.

“Bery good” and the job interview
Imagine a confident graduate in a video interview with an international company. Her grammar is excellent and her answers are thoughtful. But when she says “I have a bery good bision for this role”, the interviewer pauses and asks her to repeat. It happens three or four times. Nothing she said was wrong. A few sounds simply came out the way they work in Bangla.
Two weeks of focused practice on V, W and Z changes everything. Her next interview flows. Pronunciation problems are rarely about intelligence or vocabulary. They’re about a few habits from your first language, and habits can be retrained.
The sounds that matter most for Bangla speakers
| Sound | Common issue | Practice pairs | Mouth tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| V | Said like B or BH | very / berry, vest / best, van / ban | Top teeth lightly touch the lower lip, then buzz |
| W | Said like V or B | wet / vet, wine / vine, west / vest | Round the lips like a small O, no teeth |
| Z | Said like J | zoo / Jew, zip / jip, zero | Like S, but add voice (buzz in your throat) |
| F | Said like PH (a puff of air) | fan / pan, fine / pine | Top teeth on lower lip, blow air through |
| TH (think) | Said like T or TH | think / tink, three / tree | Tongue tip lightly between teeth, blow air |
| TH (this) | Said like D | this / dis, they / day | Same position, add voice |
| S and SH | Mixed up | see / she, sip / ship, sort / short | S: tongue behind teeth. SH: lips pushed forward |
| Short and long vowels | No difference | ship / sheep, full / fool, live / leave | Long vowels are held a little longer and tenser |
Extra sounds before S-clusters
Many Bangla speakers add a small vowel before words starting with S plus another consonant: “school” becomes “ish-kool”, “station” becomes “es-tation”. Practise starting directly with the S: sss-chool, sss-tation, sss-port. Say it slowly at first, then at normal speed.
Word stress: the hidden key
English words have one syllable that is stronger than the others. Put the stress in the wrong place and even correct sounds can be hard to understand.

Minimal pairs are two words that differ by only one sound, such as “very” and “berry”. Practising them trains you to hear and produce the difference.
How long does it take to improve pronunciation?
With 10 minutes of focused daily practice on one sound at a time, many learners notice clear improvement within a few weeks.
