WordPress patterns are ready-made groups of blocks you can insert and edit. Synced patterns (formerly reusable blocks) stay linked, so editing one updates it everywhere, which is ideal for repeated calls to action or contact blocks. Unsynced patterns insert an independent copy you can change per page. Create one by selecting blocks, clicking the three-dot menu and choosing Create pattern.
- Synced patterns update everywhere.
- Unsynced patterns are editable starting points.
- Manage them in Appearance, Editor, Patterns.
- Great for consistent blog CTAs and author notes.
- The Elementor equivalent is templates and global widgets.
Synced vs unsynced patterns
| Type | Behaviour | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Synced | Edits apply everywhere | CTA banners, contact blocks |
| Unsynced | Independent copies | Layouts, hero designs |

How do you create a pattern?
- Build the blocks in a post or page.
- Select them, open the three-dot menu, Create pattern.
- Name it, choose synced or not, add a category.
- Insert it from the block inserter’s Patterns tab.
Picture a blogger who adds a “Book a free call” box to 50 posts manually, then changes the price. With a synced pattern, that is one edit. Compare with Elementor global widgets and Gutenberg vs Elementor.
