Facebook Ad Targeting Explained: Broad, Interests, Custom and Lookalike Audiences

How Facebook ad targeting works today: Advantage+ and broad audiences, interest targeting, custom and lookalike audiences, and a simple setup for small businesses.

Facebook ad targeting explained: broad, interest, custom and lookalike audiences

Table of Contents

Facebook ad targeting now works in three layers: broad or Advantage+ audience (you give Meta a few signals and its algorithm finds buyers), interest and demographic targeting (you choose traits yourself), and custom or lookalike audiences built from your own customers and website visitors. For most small businesses the best setup today is a broad or Advantage+ audience for finding new customers, a custom audience of recent visitors for retargeting, and strong creative doing the real filtering. Detailed interest targeting still works, but it matters far less than it did a few years ago.

Key takeaways
  • Your creative and offer decide who responds. Targeting mainly sets the boundaries.
  • Advantage+ audience treats your choices as suggestions and can go beyond them when it finds better results.
  • Detailed targeting exclusions were removed in 2024, but you can still exclude custom audiences such as existing customers.
  • Lookalikes built from real buyers usually beat lookalikes built from page likes.

The story of the over-targeted ad

A few years ago, a typical small shop owner setting up an ad would do something like this: women, 25 to 34, living in Gulshan, interested in fashion AND Zara AND online shopping AND engaged shoppers, excluding people who like competitor brands. The audience estimate would shrink to a few thousand people, and it felt smart. Precise. Professional.

Then the ad would barely spend, or spend at a very high cost, because the algorithm had almost no room to find the people most likely to buy. Meanwhile, a competitor running a simple broad audience with a great video was getting cheaper sales from people who never “liked” fashion pages at all.

Meta’s system has changed a lot since then. Understanding how it works today saves you from building audiences that look clever on screen but quietly drain your budget.

The three types of audience, explained simply

AudienceWhat it isUse it for
Broad / Advantage+ audienceLocation, age and maybe a few suggestions. Meta’s AI finds the people most likely to actFinding new customers at scale, once your Pixel has data
Detailed targetingInterests, behaviours and demographics you pickVery niche products, new accounts with little data, testing angles
Custom audiencesWebsite visitors, customer lists, video viewers, people who engaged with your pageRetargeting, excluding existing customers, building lookalikes
Lookalike audiencesNew people similar to a source custom audienceScaling from a good list of buyers

What Advantage+ audience actually does

When you use Advantage+ audience, any age range, gender or interests you add are treated as suggestions, not hard limits. Meta starts with your suggestions and then expands to other people if it predicts they are more likely to complete your goal. Location stays a hard limit, and so do a few controls such as the minimum age.

This works best when Meta can learn from real results. If your Pixel or Conversions API is sending purchase or lead events, the algorithm has something solid to learn from. If it only sees clicks, it will happily find people who click a lot and buy nothing.

Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions for new ad sets from July 2024, and ad sets still using them stopped delivering in early 2025. You can still exclude custom audiences, which is how you keep ads away from people who already bought.

When interest targeting still makes sense

  • Very specific products. Sell parts for vintage motorbikes? An interest in vintage motorcycles gives a new account a useful head start.
  • Brand new ad accounts. With no Pixel data, a few relevant interests help the first campaigns find their feet.
  • Testing messages. Running the same ad to two interest groups can show you which type of person responds more.

Keep interest audiences reasonably large. Stacking narrow interests with “AND” logic usually costs more than it saves.

Custom audiences: your most valuable targeting

Custom audiences are built from people who already know you. They are the warmest people you can advertise to.

Website visitorsPeople who visited your site or specific pages, kept for up to 180 days. Needs the Meta Pixel.
Customer listUpload emails or phone numbers of customers (with permission). Meta matches them to accounts.
Video viewersPeople who watched a percentage of your videos. Cheap to build, great for a second message.
Page and Instagram engagersPeople who messaged, commented, saved or followed. Warm and often ready to buy.

Lookalike audiences: how to make them work

A lookalike asks Meta to find new people who resemble a source audience. The quality of the source decides the quality of the lookalike.

  1. Use buyers, not likersA list of 300 real customers is a far better source than 30,000 page likes.
  2. Start smallA 1% lookalike in your country is the closest match. Test 1% to 3% before going wider.
  3. Refresh the sourceUpdate the customer list every month or two, so the lookalike reflects your current buyers.
  4. Compare against broadRun the lookalike next to a broad audience. Sometimes broad wins, and that is fine.

Special Ad Categories: when targeting is limited

If your ad is about housing, employment, credit and financial products, or social issues, elections and politics, Meta requires you to declare a Special Ad Category. Targeting options are then restricted (for example, age, gender and many detailed options are limited), so plan your creative to do more of the work.

Common targeting mistakes

  • Audiences so narrow that the ad set cannot exit the learning phase.
  • Showing “first order discount” ads to people who bought last week.
  • Running five ad sets with overlapping audiences that compete with each other.
  • Changing targeting every day instead of letting results build up.
  • Blaming targeting when the real problem is a weak offer or a slow landing page.

Frequently asked questions

Is broad targeting better than interest targeting on Facebook?

Often, yes, once your Pixel or Conversions API is sending real conversion data. Broad and Advantage+ audiences give Meta more room to find buyers. Interest targeting can still help very niche products and brand new ad accounts.

Can I still exclude audiences in Facebook ads?

Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions in 2024, but you can still exclude custom audiences, such as past customers or recent website visitors.

What is a good lookalike audience size?

Start with a 1% lookalike in your country, built from real customers, and test up to 3%. Larger percentages reach more people but are less similar to your source.

How long do website visitors stay in a custom audience?

You can keep website visitors in a Meta website custom audience for up to 180 days.

What are Special Ad Categories?

They apply to ads about housing, employment, credit and financial products, and social issues, elections or politics. Targeting options are restricted for these ads.
