Role-play is one of the fastest ways to get ready for real English conversations: you and a partner each take a role (customer and shopkeeper, interviewer and candidate, doctor and patient) and act out a realistic situation for a few minutes, then swap. Choose situations you’ll actually face, give each person a short role card with a goal and a problem, keep it to five minutes, and finish with quick feedback. Below are 15 ready-to-use role-play scenarios for everyday life, work and travel.
- Role-play rehearses real situations before they happen.
- Give each role a goal and a small problem. That creates real conversation.
- Swap roles so both people practise both sides.
- Five minutes per role-play is enough.
- Run role-plays on video with a partner in the free online English practice rooms.
Rehearsal before the real show
Imagine someone moving abroad for work. In their first week they’ll open a bank account, talk to a landlord, see a doctor and introduce themselves to new colleagues. Each of these conversations has its own words, questions and surprises.
If the first time they hear “Do you have proof of address?” is at the bank counter, they’ll freeze. If they’ve practised that exact scene three times with a partner, it will feel familiar. Actors rehearse. Language learners can too.
