To read an SEO audit report, look at three things in order: the critical issues (they block rankings), the category scores (they show where your weak spots are) and the action plan (it tells you what to fix first). The overall score is a progress tracker, not a ranking prediction. A page that scores 80 and answers the searcher well will beat a page that scores 95 with weak content.
- Critical issues come first because they can stop a page from being indexed or trusted.
- Category scores show which area needs work: crawling, on-page, content, speed and more.
- Warnings are improvements, not emergencies.
- “Could not verify” link results usually mean another site blocked the checker, not a broken link.
- Use the score to track progress on the same page over time.
Why do SEO reports feel confusing?
Picture a clinic manager who runs her website through three different SEO tools in one afternoon. One says 62, another says 84, the third shows 140 “errors” in red. She closes the laptop with no idea what to do next.
The reports were not wrong. Each tool simply weights problems differently and some list every tiny warning as an error. Once you know how a report is structured, you can ignore the noise and act on the few items that matter.
What does the overall SEO score mean?
In the Free SEO Audit Tool, every check is marked Critical, Warning or Passed and weighted by impact. A missing title or a noindex tag weighs far more than a missing Apple touch icon. Category scores are combined into one overall score, with crawling, on-page SEO and speed counting most.
| Score | Grade | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 90 to 100 | A | Technical health is excellent. Spend your time on content and links. |
| 80 to 89 | B | Strong. Clear the remaining warnings when you have time. |
| 70 to 79 | C | Fix the critical items this week. |
| 55 to 69 | D | Several issues are likely holding rankings back. |
| Below 55 | F | Start with the Fix first list today. |
Do not compare your score from one tool with a score from another. Compare your own page before and after you fix things.
What are the ten report categories?
- Crawling and indexing: status codes, redirects, robots.txt, sitemap, canonical tags, noindex, HTTPS and www versions. Problems here can hide a page completely.
- On-page SEO: title tag, meta description, H1 and heading outline, keyword focus, URL and language.
- Content quality: word count, readability, text-to-code ratio, lists and tables, freshness.
- Speed and Core Web Vitals: Google PageSpeed scores, LCP, INP and CLS, server response, compression and render-blocking files.
- Links: broken links, internal links, links without text, redirects.
- Images: alt text, file size, modern formats, width and height, lazy loading.
- Mobile and usability: viewport, zoom, favicon, outdated HTML, accessibility.
- Security and trust: SSL validity and expiry, mixed content, security headers, contact details and privacy policy.
- Schema and social: structured data, Open Graph and X (Twitter) tags.
- AI search readiness: whether AI crawlers can read the page, FAQ-style answers, clear authorship and llms.txt.
How do you tell a real problem from noise?
Ask one question for each item: does this stop people or search engines from finding, understanding or using the page? If yes, it is real. If it only makes the page slightly better, it can wait.
- Real: noindex on a page you want to rank, 404 internal links, no H1, a 5 MB hero image, an expired SSL certificate.
- Usually noise: a meta keywords tag, one missing security header on a hosted platform you cannot configure, or a missing llms.txt file.
- Needs a human check: a canonical tag pointing to another URL (fine for duplicates, a problem otherwise) or AI crawlers blocked in robots.txt (a valid business choice).
How do you turn the report into a to-do list?
- Start with Fix firstThese are critical issues with high impact. Most take minutes in your CMS.
- Move to Fix nextImportant improvements such as speed and render-blocking files. Some need a plugin or a developer.
- Polish laterSmaller warnings that add up: alt text, schema details, headers.
- Export and shareDownload the CSV to track tasks in a spreadsheet, or the PDF to send to your developer.
- Re-testRun the audit again after each batch of fixes and note the new score.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good SEO audit score?
80 or above is strong and 90 or above is excellent. Below 70, fix the critical issues first. Compare your own page over time rather than scores from different tools.
Why do SEO tools give different scores?
Each tool checks different items and weights them differently. Focus on the specific critical issues, which most tools agree on, rather than the number.
Are warnings in an SEO report urgent?
Usually not. Warnings are improvements. Critical issues such as noindex, broken pages, missing titles or no HTTPS are the urgent ones.
Why does my report show links as unverified?
Some sites, such as LinkedIn, block automated checkers and return codes like 403, 429 or 999. Open the link yourself; if it loads, it is fine.
Can I share an SEO audit report with my developer?
Yes. Download the PDF report or the CSV of issues, or copy the share link, which reruns the audit for the same page.
