WhatsApp compresses photos to save data, which is why they can look soft or blocky after sending. To send better quality, tap the HD button before sending (or set Settings, Storage and data, Media quality, Upload quality to HD), and to send the untouched original file, attach the photo as a Document instead of from the gallery. If you need the photo smaller on purpose, for example for slow connections or a group with many members, resize and compress it yourself first so you control how it looks.
- Standard quality is heavily compressed. HD is much better. Document keeps the original.
- You can make HD the default upload quality in WhatsApp settings.
- Receivers can also choose auto-download quality in their own settings.
- Resizing before sending gives you control instead of WhatsApp guessing.
- Prepare photos with the free Image Compressor and cropper.
Why the product photo looked worse on the customer’s phone
Picture a jewellery seller in Dhaka who sends product photos to customers on WhatsApp. On her phone, the gold earrings sparkle. The customer replies: “Photo is blurry, can you send a clear one?” She sends it again. Same result.
The problem was not her camera. WhatsApp was shrinking the image to standard quality before sending. Once she switched to HD for product photos and sent catalogue PDFs as documents, the complaints stopped.
Three ways to send a photo on WhatsApp
| Method | Quality | Data used | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (default) | Compressed noticeably | Lowest | Casual chats, slow networks |
| HD | Much sharper, still optimised | Higher | Product photos, family photos, anything people zoom into |
| As a Document | Original file, no change | Highest | Printing, designers, legal or official images |
How to send HD photos
- Open the chatTap the attach icon (paperclip on Android, plus on iPhone) and choose Gallery or Photos.
- Select the photoYou can select several at once.
- Tap the HD iconAt the top of the editing screen, choose HD quality.
- SendOn mobile data, WhatsApp may ask you to confirm.
Make HD the default
Go to Settings, Storage and data, Media quality and set Upload quality to HD. In the same place, Auto-download quality controls the quality of media you receive.
How to send the original photo as a document
- Tap attachChoose Document instead of Gallery.
- Browse to the photoOn Android, use “Browse other docs” to find your camera folder. On iPhone, you can choose from Photos in the document picker.
- SendThe receiver gets the exact original file with full resolution.
When you want smaller, not bigger
Big groups, slow internet, or customers with little phone storage? Shrink photos yourself before sending:
- Crop out empty space so the subject fills the frame.
- Resize to about 1280 to 1600 pixels on the long side.
- Compress to around 200 to 400 KB.
The result looks better than letting WhatsApp guess, because you decide what gets cropped and how much detail stays.
Tips for businesses using WhatsApp
- Send new collections as one well-designed PDF catalogue (as a document) plus a few HD hero photos.
- Use the WhatsApp Business catalogue feature for products you sell often.
- Keep photos consistent: same background, same light, same crop. See AI product photography for easy backgrounds.
- Add your logo small in a corner so forwarded photos still point back to you.
