Retargeting ads (also called remarketing) show ads to people who already visited your website, watched your videos or engaged with your page, but have not bought yet. Because these people already know you, retargeting usually brings some of the cheapest sales and leads in an ad account. To set it up, install the Meta Pixel or Google tag, build audiences such as “visited in the last 30 days” or “added to cart but did not buy”, exclude recent buyers, and show them a different message from your first ad: reviews, answers to doubts, or a reason to act now.
- Most people do not buy on the first visit. Retargeting brings them back.
- Split audiences by how warm they are: viewers, visitors, cart abandoners.
- Change the message. Retargeting is a second conversation, not the same ad again.
- Always exclude people who just bought, and keep frequency in check.

The shoes in the cart
You have probably lived this. One evening you look at a pair of shoes online, add them to the cart, then your phone rings and you forget all about it. Two days later, while scrolling Facebook, the same shoes appear with a little note: “Still thinking about it? Free delivery ends Friday.” And you buy them.
Nothing magic happened. The shop simply remembered you, and reminded you at a moment when you were not busy. That is retargeting, and it works the same way for a small clothing page in Dhaka as it does for a global brand.
The difference is that most small businesses never set it up. They keep paying to reach strangers while hundreds of almost-customers drift away every week.
Why retargeting works
- Familiarity: people trust names they have seen before.
- Timing: the first visit is often at a bad moment. A reminder catches a better one.
- Smaller, cheaper audiences: you spend on a few thousand interested people instead of millions of strangers.
- Better data: warm audiences convert more, which helps the platform optimise.
Retargeting audiences to build
| Audience | How warm | Suggested window | Message idea |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video viewers (50% or more) | Warm | 30 to 90 days | A deeper look: demo, behind the scenes, founder story |
| Page and Instagram engagers | Warm | 30 to 90 days | Best seller, customer reviews |
| All website visitors | Warmer | 7 to 30 days | Answer common doubts, show guarantees |
| Product page viewers | Hot | 3 to 14 days | The exact product they viewed, with reviews |
| Added to cart, no purchase | Hottest | 1 to 7 days | Reminder, delivery info, small time-limited incentive |
| Past buyers | Customers | 30 to 180 days | New arrivals, refills, referral offer |
On Meta, website custom audiences can keep visitors for up to 180 days. Shorter windows are smaller but hotter, so start short for cart abandoners and longer for video viewers.
How to set up retargeting on Facebook and Instagram
- Install trackingAdd the Meta Pixel, ideally with the Conversions API. Our WordPress setup guide shows how.
- Create custom audiencesIn Ads Manager, open Audiences, create a Custom Audience from Website, and choose the people and time window, for example everyone who added to cart in the last 7 days.
- Create exclusion audiencesBuild a Purchase audience for the last 7 to 30 days so buyers stop seeing “come back” ads.
- Create a retargeting campaignUse the Sales or Leads objective, select your warm audiences and exclude recent buyers.
- Write retargeting creativeReviews, a demo, an FAQ answered, delivery or return guarantees. Do not just repeat the first ad.
- Watch frequencyIf the same people see your ad many times a week and results drop, refresh the creative or widen the audience.
Retargeting on Google
Google Ads offers similar options through “your data” segments: website visitors, app users, YouTube viewers and customer lists. You can use them in Display, YouTube, Demand Gen and Performance Max campaigns, or add them to Search campaigns to bid more for people who have visited before. The Google Ads beginner guide covers the basics first.
What to say in a retargeting ad
How much to spend on retargeting
Retargeting audiences are small, so they need less budget. A common starting point is around 10 to 20% of your total ad budget, adjusted to the size of your audience. If the audience is tiny, the ad will show to the same people too often. If it is large and converting well, it can take more. See our ad budget guide for full examples.
Respect people’s privacy
Good retargeting feels helpful, not creepy. Keep windows reasonable, cap how often people see you, avoid sensitive topics, and explain tracking in your privacy policy. Where consent rules apply, only add people to audiences after they agree to marketing cookies.
Common retargeting mistakes
- Showing “come back” ads to people who bought yesterday.
- Using the same creative for months until people ignore it.
- One giant “all visitors, 180 days” audience with one generic message.
- No tracking, so audiences never fill up.
- Sending retargeted visitors to the homepage instead of the product they viewed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between retargeting and remarketing?
In everyday use they mean the same thing: showing ads to people who already interacted with your business. Google calls it remarketing, and many marketers say retargeting.
How long should my retargeting window be?
It depends on how warm the audience is. Cart abandoners work best with short windows of 1 to 7 days, website visitors 7 to 30 days, and video viewers or engagers 30 to 90 days.
How much of my ad budget should go to retargeting?
A common starting point is about 10 to 20% of the total, adjusted for audience size. Small audiences need small budgets to avoid showing the same ad too often.
Do I need the Meta Pixel for retargeting?
For website retargeting on Facebook and Instagram, yes. You can still retarget video viewers and page engagers without it.
How do I stop showing ads to people who already bought?
Create a custom audience of recent purchasers and add it as an exclusion in your retargeting ad sets.
