For most small businesses, the right way to start with Google Ads is a single Search campaign aimed at a handful of high-intent keywords, with conversion tracking switched on from day one and a list of negative keywords to block wasted clicks. Start small, with a daily budget you can afford to lose while you learn, write two responsive search ads per ad group, and send people to a page that matches exactly what they searched for. Only add Performance Max or other campaign types once Search is bringing in leads at a cost you are happy with.
- Google Search ads catch people at the moment they are looking for you. That intent is what makes them worth paying for.
- Start with one campaign, one location, a few tightly related keywords and phrase or exact match.
- Negative keywords save more money than any bidding trick.
- Without conversion tracking, Google is optimising blind. Set it up before you spend.

Why Google Ads feels scary (and why it doesn’t have to be)
Say you fix air conditioners in Dhaka. It is April, the heat is brutal, and hundreds of people are typing “AC servicing near me” into Google every day. Some of those people could be your customers by tonight. That is the promise of Google Ads.
Then you open the Google Ads dashboard for the first time and see campaign types, bid strategies, match types, audiences, assets, auctions. It feels like the controls of an aeroplane. Many owners either give up or click “Next” on every screen and let Google decide everything. A week later the budget is gone and the phone has not rung.
The good news is that you only need a small part of Google Ads to get real results. The rest can wait.
Which campaign type should a small business start with?
| Campaign type | Where ads show | Best for | Start here? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search | Google search results | People actively looking for a service or product | Yes, for almost everyone |
| Performance Max | Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps | Online shops and businesses with solid conversion data | Later |
| Demand Gen | YouTube, Discover, Gmail | Creating interest with images and video | Later |
| Display | Websites and apps in Google’s network | Awareness and remarketing | Mostly for remarketing |
| Video | YouTube | Brand awareness, explainer videos | When you have good videos |
Search wins for beginners because you only pay when someone clicks after searching for something you chose. You can see exactly which words brought the click. That makes it the easiest campaign to understand and fix.
Choosing keywords that bring buyers, not browsers
Think about what a person types when they are ready to act, not when they are just curious. “How does an AC work” is a student. “AC repair Uttara” is a customer.
- Service plus location: “plumber Dhanmondi”, “wedding photographer Sylhet”
- Product plus buying word: “buy office chair online”, “price of standing desk”
- Problem plus urgency: “laptop screen repair same day”
Match types in plain words
A sensible start is a mix of phrase and exact match. Once conversion tracking has collected some data, you can test broad match with a smart bidding strategy.
Negative keywords: the cheapest way to save money
Negative keywords tell Google when not to show your ad. Our AC repair shop does not want clicks from “AC repair course”, “AC technician job” or “how to repair AC yourself”. Each of those clicks costs money and will never become a customer.
Start with obvious ones: free, job, jobs, course, training, salary, DIY, PDF, used (if you sell new). Then check the Search terms report every few days in the first month and add any irrelevant searches you see.
Writing responsive search ads that get clicked
Google’s responsive search ads let you enter up to 15 headlines (30 characters each) and 4 descriptions (90 characters each). Google mixes and matches them to find the best combination for each search.
- Put your main keyword in at least two or three headlines.
- Give each headline a different job: the service, the benefit, the proof, the offer, the call to action.
- Use numbers and specifics: “Technician in 2 Hours”, “1,200+ ACs Serviced”, “Fixed Price, No Surprises”.
- Avoid pinning every headline. Pin only what must always show, such as a legal line.
Set up conversion tracking before spending
A conversion is anything valuable a visitor does: a phone call, a form submission, a WhatsApp click, a purchase. When Google knows which clicks turned into conversions, its bidding gets smarter and your reports become honest.
On a WordPress site, the most common setups are Google Tag Manager with the Google Ads conversion tag, or importing key events from Google Analytics 4. Test it yourself: submit your own form and check that the conversion appears.
Your first campaign, step by step
- Set one clear goalLeads, calls or sales. Pick one and decide what a good cost per result would be for your business.
- Create a Search campaignTurn off the Display Network and Search Partners while you learn, so you can see what Search alone does.
- Choose your location carefullyTarget only the areas you actually serve, and choose people “in” that location, not just interested in it.
- Build one or two ad groupsEach with 5 to 15 closely related keywords in phrase and exact match.
- Write two responsive search ads per ad groupUse all 15 headline slots if you can, with real details.
- Add assetsSitelinks, callouts, a call asset and your location help your ad take more space and earn more clicks.
- Pick a simple bid strategyMaximise clicks with a sensible maximum CPC to begin, then switch to Maximise conversions once you have steady conversion data.
- Check the search terms every few daysAdd negatives, pause keywords that spend without results and move budget to what works.
How much should you spend?
Google Ads has no minimum spend. The real minimum is the budget that buys enough clicks to learn something. If clicks in your area cost around 30 taka and you want 20 clicks a day, that is about 600 taka a day before you know whether the ads work. Our ad budget guide walks through the maths for Meta, Google and TikTok.
The landing page matters as much as the ad
A great ad sending people to a slow, confusing homepage is like a great shop sign above a locked door. The page should repeat the promise in the ad, load fast on mobile, show a phone number or WhatsApp button at the top and include reviews or proof. If your website is holding your ads back, we build fast WordPress landing pages designed for paid traffic.
